Daily Mirror News: A notable namesake

Sharing the Mindanao Daily Mirror's name, the Daily Mirror News is a British tabloid newspaper which circulates daily and was founded in 1903. It was originally intended by its founder to be a newspaper for women by women. As this did not prove to be successful, it became a pictorial newspaper with a wider reader target. During the Second World War, the Daily Mirror was the go-to news publication for the ordinary civilian and soldier. It became very critical of political leaderships and established parties. Today, it has become a truly popular medium for the British people to get both information and entertainment. It has a sister paper which circulates every Sunday called the Sunday Mirror. Throughout the history of the Daily Mirror, it has had a lot of notable publications which showed extravagance, political criticisms, and pop culture advertisements. Here are some of them:

Daily Mirror
On April 2, 1996, the Daily Mirror was completely printed on blue paper as a marketing strategy for Pepsi-Cola. On the same day, the beverage company has re-launched their cans with a blue design.

In May 2004, the newspaper published incriminating photos of British soldiers torturing and abusing Iraqi prisoners. As it turns out however, these images are actually hoaxes. The printing and publication of these photos resulted to the firing of the current editor during that time, Piers Morgan. The Daily Mirror was honest to admit that they were really hoaxed. Unfortunately, the publishing of these pictures raised such an uproar in the British community. In February 2008, the Daily Mirror implied that TV presenter Kate Garraway was having an affair. Because of these accusations, she sued the publication for libel receiving an apology and compensation pay.

Another popular and infamous columnist in this newspaper are the 3AM Girls, which is a group of girls writing about the private lives of British celebrities which may or may not be true. The columnists of this gossip column generally do not receive positive reactions from readers and the Britons as a whole. Other notable columnists are Kevin Maguire, a columnist on UK politics, Tony Parsons, a Monday columnist, Penman and Greenwood, who are investigators, and Keith Waterhouse, which concentrates on humorous columns.

Daily Mirror
Amidst all the disapproval of the British community for this tabloid, the Daily Mirror has received a lot of awards for itself. In 2002, it won the “Newspaper of the Year” in the British Press Awards. In the same awarding body, it received “Scoop of the Year” in 2003, 2004, 2006, and the “Front Page of the Year” in 2007. It also won “Team of the Year” in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006. These awards have proven how the Daily Mirror has made an important mark in news history.

The Daily Mirror News - and as well the Mindanao Daily Mirror - do have one important thing in common. Spreading and providing the latest information to their chosen market. That in itself is one thing that can be considered as award-winning, in which no prize can equal to.
